Fined For Snacking! Seriously? Only In Rome

Shocking news isn’t it? Indeed it’s a very shocking news! Before you get to visit Rome one of these days, get yourself oriented with the no-snacking zones to avoid the hefty amount of €25 to €500 fine.

It was just this October when the mayor of Rome enforced an ordinance prohibiting anyone to have their snack or eat something near their famous monuments until the end of this year. Mayor Gianni Alemanno’s intentions were made clear but not everyone were pleased especially those tourists who weren’t really aware.

Just imagine enjoying your burger while strolling around their city when suddenly a policeman would collect fine from you like you have smoked in a non-smoking area.

The protest of the people even reached into having a Gastro Flash Mob wherein a lot of people went to the piazza each carrying a sandwich. The police officers immediately controlled the crowd and have them pay the indicated fine.

If you have any plans of visiting Rome one of these days, take note of the no-snacking zones or better yet save your meal inside a restaurant to avoid the fine and the hassle of being caught.

That is certainly interesting news. It’s a great way to prevent littering around their monument but I’m questioning how effective this fine is.

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

indeed! we’ll just hope it would be as effective as they are expecting it to be

  • http://dominiquegoh.com Dominique Goh

That’s an interesting fine. Hope it does help keep the place clean.

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

that’s actually the main reason of the ordinance… but i guess the visitors just dont know how to put their garbage in the right places…

  • http://www.iheartgoodhealth.com Aileen

Imagine that…a policeman telling you to get your hands up where he can see them and very slowly put down the sandwich on the ground…like it’s a gun or something. Lol! Just my super active imagination there. :-)

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

hahahaha… and then the policeman will say “you have the right not to chew what’s in your mouth anymore!” LOL

  • http://www.mommyunwired.com/ Marie

Haha, interesting exchange, Aileen and Nice. Kalurkey!

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

      hahaha thanks! :)

LOL @ the no-snacking zones! I’d be pissed off if this policy is for public here in the country. It’s ridiculous!

  • http://mylenerabago.com Mylene

I think the mayor should have made his intentions clear about the new law. If it is to prevent littering, I guess only those who do not dispose their wastes properly should be fined.

    This an interesting new anyways.

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

thanks for dropping by… but i guess it would be nice if the mayor will just implement the fine to those who dont know how to dispose their garbage-from-snacks properly…

  • http://swirlsandscribbles.com aby

i will keep this in mind. hehe who know i might go to rome in the future.. :)

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

the ordinance would be up to December 31st of this year but who knows it will be implemented forever. =)

Tourist should be careful when visiting other countries. This can easily happen anywhere, not just in Rome, when we don’t know the laws and ordinances of the country.

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

indeed… research should be done ahead of time…

  • http://mamaisworking.blogspot.com Meikah Ybañez-Delid

Whoa! Careful careful! It’s really best to research about the place first and know their culture before going. :) Nice one!

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

      indeed! =)

I hope they have prominent signs in the areas where eating is not allowed. But they should also designate picnic areas para hindi magreklamo mga locals. Or maybe they should just be strict with no littering policy if the whole point is to keep the places clean.

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

i think that would be the best thing to do…

  • http://www.deliciouslyspicy.com January

Noted. Who knows I might win the lottery before the year end then I’ll definitely visit Rome. hehe

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

me too! i hope to visit that place someday…

  • http://womanscribbles.net sanna

Hulihin na lng ang mga naglilitter, huwag ang mga nagmemeryenda, asus!:)

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

onga! mas mabuti yung ganun… or place a lot of garbage bins!

  • http://cymplified.com ceemee

I sure hope I could visit Rome one day. And yes, designated picnic areas would be much appreciated. Does it apply when you’re eating while walking?

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

i think eating while walking is included… O.o i hope to visit Rome too!

  • http://www.henrysmom.com Ditas

Didn’t they put signs? I bet they have a major littering problem. At least their officers are putting the mayor’s plan into action by fining this people. Unlike here in the Philippines, we have “no littering” signs everywhere but there is trash all over the place. :(

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

exactly! some Filipinos don’t care about signs… i just dont know if they were not able to see it, they dont know how to read or they simply dont care..

  • http://www.adventuresonplanetmom.blogspot.com tyna

    seriously? being fined for snacking?

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

      yeah! it’s real!

  • http://www.ladyandhersweetescapes.com/ Lady Anne

Thanks for the info. Travelers should really be warned ahead! I’ll surely bring a location map of historical monuments if ever I’ll go there. :)

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

yes they should really be warned!

  • http://www.randomxthoughts.com/ reese

ay grabe ito, tourists should watch out for this

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

      yeah! they should be careful!

  • http://www.janzcrystalz.info January/JanzCrystalz

Cool! tourists should be well informed about countries laws before traveling.

  • http://theunstressed.com kat

For real? Oh my! I must remember this when I visit Rome. *wishful thinking*

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

      yes for real… me too!

  • http://www.awahmslife.net/ Mommy Lexi

I hope they include this info in orientations for everyone going to Rome. Ang Pinoy pa naman mahilig kumain kahit saan. Haha.

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

exactly! or big posters na lang saying “No Snacking Zone”

  • http://inpinayseyes.blogspot.com/ Pinay R.

Good it wasn’t still there last June! we have to be careful not only of snatchers there, but also the police!

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

naku! mas nakakatakot yata ang snatchers… O.o last October lang yata to sis ’til end of December…

  • http://www.singlemomreviews.com/ Singlemom Reviews

Seriously? But you’re right if it’s good to be oriented before planning a trip to Rome..I myself don’t want to spend extra coz of the fined for snacking…:)

    • http://nicelycaptured.blogpost.com niceurdaneta

yeah… maybe you’ll just enjoy the place and eat afterwards… hehehe

  • http://myoweinilife.com Jhari

That’s a good way to avoid littering hehehe! Though I guess it all depend on the person and how responsible he is right? Some naman kasi they can just simply throw it in the trash, some are just really really naive.

  • http://grownupsforaday.blogspot.com/ Rose

I think it may work here in the Philippines so we put sections on where the maintenance aides will focus on – at least until we have the discipline not to throw trash everywhere.

  • verna

Whoa! That’s tough, especially when one gets hungry a lot like me. haha.

  • http://www.highteaonline.com Krizza

Well, for me it’s a good thing and this will help the people be aware of their responsibility while in the public places and to help them respect and recognize places that should be respected.
